Humans and horses have been living together since 4,000 B.C.E. The relationship has produced many high points — the Budweiser Clydesdales, Mr. Ed, Peter Schaffer’s Equus — and some low ones too — Catherine the Great, Canadian Mounties, Seabiscuit. But like peanut butter and jelly, humans and horses are stuck together for the foreseeable future.
And now Cirque de Soleil cofounder Normond Latourelle has capitalized on horse-human love to create a spectacular new show called Cavalia. Starring a cast of more than 100, Cavalia features 12 breeds of live horses, acrobats, aerialists, riders, and musicians. In the Cirque de Soliel tradition, expect to be mesmerized by dudes standing on the backs of two horses as they race around the 71,000-square-foot tent erected in Bicentennial Park (301 Biscayne Blvd., Miami). But also expect some quieter and more beautiful moments than you’re used to from Cirque: men and women gazing deeply into horses’ eyes, etc. You know, the kind of stuff you used to have on the front of your Trapper Keeper.
