Nova Southeastern University will celebrate Black History Month with a grand-opening reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday for the seventh-annual African Presence Art Exhibition “Road to Empowerment: Art of the Florida Highwaymen,”which will run through April. Then from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, learn about tracing family roots of African-Americans back to Africa by attending “Out of Africa: The Diaspora for Family Historians.” Events continue throughout the month, including an African-American Literature Read-In from 1 to 3 p.m. February 21. Unlike a traditional reading, attendees are invited to select a short passage from their favorite African-American author to read aloud. And if you still haven’t satisfied your literary fix, South Florida local Iva C. Marc will wrap up the month’s events from 4 to 6 p.m. February 28 with readings from her first book of poetry, Moist.
