Hello, Dalai

What you’ll notice first about listening to a chat with Tenzin Gyatso, known in the hood as the 14th Dalai Lama, is his aura of humble, genial calmness. This is no small feat for a man who has been the spiritual leader of his people for 49 years; he has been a Big Deal long enough to have turned into a real prick. But then, after 13 reincarnations, he can afford to take the long view. Nobel Peace Prize? Worldwide stardom? Honorary Canadian citizenship? Meh. He knows he’s just a stray lint speck on the great tapestry of the cosmos, same as you and me, but until he rejoins the void, he gets invited to all the best parties. So he has that going for him, which is nice. If you miss him this time, take heart that he will be back in some form again and again and again. If you worry you might be coming back as a daisy or a warthog or a narwhal, though, you better catch him at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the D. Taft University Center (3301 College Ave., Davie). Tickets start at $15; log onto Ticketmaster.com.
Tue., Feb. 23, 1:30 p.m., 2010
