Jive, Turkey

There’s a saying in Turkey: The soul comes through the throat. So it’s probably no coincidence that the lamb kebab, the meat stew, and the stuffed ribs are so damn tasty. Lucky for you, this Saturday and Sunday starting at 10 a.m., Huizenga Plaza (32 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) becomes a smorgasbord of soulful treats when the Florida Turkish Festival sets up camp.

Stuff yourself full of grub, then go nuts in the bounce house. No, bad idea — unless you want your soul coming back up from where it came. Better idea: Sit back and enjoy the Mediterranean pop from Turkish star Eser Bayar or the traditional folk dancing of the Blue Star dance troupe, which comes all the way from North Carolina to break it down for South Florida. An art show featuring calligraphy and marbling, an exhibition of Turkish carpets, and a super-rare collection of U.S. and Turkish paper money round out the attractions. Oh, and did we mention lamb kebab? Call the Anatolia Cultural Center at 954-956-8828, or visit floridaturkishfest.com.
