He Really Is a Saint!

The statistics behind sexual abuse are startling. One out of every four girls and one out of every six boys are sexually abused before they turn 18. And if anything can be more haunting than that, it’s that only 10 percent of this abuse is from strangers. Thursday starting at 7 p.m., the Raising Humanity event at Cinema Paradiso will help raise funds for the Heath Evans Foundation, which seeks to combat sexual abuse. The event features a red carpet, hors d’oeuvres, and champagne, along with awareness and personally connected stories about sexual abuse.

You might know Evans as the New Orleans Saints fullback who sat on the sidelines during the Super Bowl this year due to injury. He also played with the Dolphins in 2005 and keeps a residence in Palm Beach County. Evans started the Heath Evans Foundation because his wife, Beth Ann Evans, is a victim of sexual abuse. And to make their marriage work, he had to learn about the effects of sexual abuse firsthand. “Doesn’t matter if you’re the beauty queen,” says Raising Humanity producer Lisa Vrancken, “or if you’re the poor black girl living in rural Alabama; the effects are all the same.”

At the event, the Evans will show a program about childhood sexual abuse called Raising Humanity, which features their story as well as a story of a woman from Alabama whose abuser was released after only 60 days in jail. Afterward, Evans will speak. Tickets cost $75. Call 954-525-3456, or visit fliff.com.
