Somewhere, there exists a dark, smoky bar with a jukebox that spins George Jones, Gram Parsons, Delbert McClinton, and Little Feat. And if that fantasy honky-tonk lights your Marlboro, you need to know about Honey Island Swamp Band. Stranded in San Francisco post-Katrina, guitarists/vocalists Aaron Wilkinson and Chris Mulé met up with fellow New Orleans exiles Sam Price and Garland Paul, a bassist and drummer, respectively. The musicians pooled their songs, tastes, and talents and landed a residence at the Boom Boom Room. In 2007, they returned to New Orleans, where their latest album, Wishing Well, won Offbeat Magazine's blues album of the year. But Wishing Well extends beyond the blues, with classic-sounding ’tonkers such as “Dark End of the Bar” and second-line funkers such as “Decent Company.” On Wednesday, Honey Island’s Florida tour brings it to Boca’s Back Room (7200 N. Dixie Highway) for an 8 p.m. show with Jimmy Carpenter on sax. Also expect a new batch of songs from an upcoming album for the New Orleans-helping Threadhead imprint. Cover is $10.
