Getting Back at the Orange Bitch

When Florida Citrus Commission spokeswoman Anita Bryant got a Dade County referendum passed in 1977 to repeal an anti-discrimination ordinance and make LGBT people second-class citizens, local activists organized a Pride Parade and Rally. Almost 20 years later, they helped reinstate the ordinance. Gays still can’t adopt in Florida or get married, but they can’t be segregated like subhumans. And the Pride Parade and Rally that organized against Bryant goes on as “Pride-fest.”From noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, the annual outdoor bash is happening at Jaco Pastorius Park (4000 N. Dixie Highway, Oakland Park) with the usual explosion of booths selling every manner of food, drink, and knickknack, plus drag performers, singers, three DJs, the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, and the South Florida Pride Jazz Ensemble. There will be enough loud, happy LGBT people milling about in the park to give Anita Bryant an embolism. Admission to Pridefest 2010 costs $5, plus $5 for parking; the Pride Finale Party is 4 p.m. Sunday at the Sea Monster Nightclub. Call 954-561-2020, or visit pridesouthflorida.org.
Sat., March 13, noon; Sun., March 14, noon, 2010
