Is your vagina depressed? If she could talk, what would she say? Would she be angry? Insecure? The patron saint of female anatomy, Eve Ensler, set out to find the answer with Vagina Monologues, a controversial yet quasiliberating episodic play. It drew criticism when it came out in 1996 because of portrayals of violent heterosexual relationships and an account of an underaged girl having a sexual encounter with an adult woman. Some felt these episodes communicated anti-male sentiment. Others argued that pro-woman doesn’t mean anti-male and that Ensler was justified in focusing on violent acts because, well, we live in a violent world. Love it or hate it, the play became a phenomenon and established the V-Day movement — a day of consciousness-raising to end sexual violence against women and girls. These stories may represent an old-fashioned mindset (does the modern woman really feel like she can’t speak openly about vag?). But the sheer variety of sources should at least keep you entertained, if only by giving you the heebie-jeebies. The Miniaci Performing Arts Center (3100 Ray Ferraro Jr. Blvd., Davie) will present the Vagina Monologues on Friday at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $15. Call 954-462-0222, or visit miniacipac.com.
Fri., March 12, 8 p.m., 2010
