The Kids Are Alright

Who’s Lang Lang? Oh, just a child-prodigy Chinese pianist. Now 27 years old, he has played for kings and queens, helped score Hollywood films like The Painted Veil, and performed at the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony as well as with some the world’s top orchestras. Items you can purchase at his online store include a Steinway piano, a silk scarf with a piano pattern, and black Adias sneakers with gold stripes. And, as the inclusion of those hip sneakers indicates, he has a cult following by classical music fans that includes, gasp, teenagers. His mussed-up hair and musical prowess has reportedly inspired 40 million Chinese children to learn the piano. Lang Lang performs this Monday at 8 p.m. at the Knight Concert Hall (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) with the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival Orchestra, which was founded by Leonard Bernstein and is comprised of the world's best musicians under the age of 27. This is what the future sounds like. Tickets cost $50 to $125. Call 305-949-6722, or visit arshtcenter.org.
