Purple Heart

You think your life sucks? Listen to Celie, the lead character in The Color Purple. This gal will sing about surviving some of life’s most horrible tragedies — while she has a smile on her face. Perhaps, the hope in her heart will help you walk out feeling a bit better about your situation. That is, unless your personal baggage set also includes issues relating to infanticide, rape, domestic violence, racial oppression, and spiritual crisis… but we digress. Even those who typically aren’t fans of musicals find that their souls are stirred from songs belted out gospel-style by this incredibly talented cast. The play, set in rural Georgia in the 1930s, is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker.

Purple reigns at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Au-Rene Theater, 201 SW Fifth Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. It runs until April 18. Tickets cost $23 to $67. Call 954-462-0222, or visit browardcenter.org.
Sun., April 4, 2 & 7:30 p.m.; Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, 8 p.m.; Wednesdays, Saturdays, 2 & 8 p.m. Starts: April 4. Continues through April 18, 2010
