Tupperware on Uppers
In the ’50s, the Tupperware party types were the ones who celebrated the dawning of suburbia and plastic. And saleswoman Brownie Wise was the party’s pioneer. After she appeared on the cover of Business Week, Earl Tupper, the inventor of Tupperware, got jealous of her fame. He cut her out of the company in 1958 and went as far as to delete all references about her from his company’s literature.
Today, Dixie Longate, a glamorous drag queen from an Alabama trailer park, is the new Brownie Wise. She’s turned the staid Tupperware party into sexed-up theater that’s recommended for ages 16 and up. Make no mistake: Dixie is actually selling “the best plastic crap on the planet,” as she calls Tupperware, and is reportedly one of the company’s biggest sellers. Now she’s coming to South Florida to peddle her containers.
Dixie’s Tupperware Party premieres at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Broward Center for Performing Arts (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale) and runs until April 18. Tickets cost $29 to $49. VIP seating gets you a seat on the stage. Call 954-462-0222, or visit browardcenter.org.
