Punching, for Haiti
One of the amazing byproducts of Haiti’s devastating earthquake was to remind most of us just how impotent we are when it comes to helping people in desperate times. We’re not orthopedic surgeons, disaster-area relief helicopter pilots, or concrete-sawing, collapsed-building search teams. Most of us write checks to aid organizations or cobble together fundraiser concerts starring bands whose singers didn’t know the difference between Port-au-Prince and Pago Pago until mid-January.
Andre Berto (25-0, 19 KOs) is different. The World Boxing Council welterweight champ no doubt feels the same helplessness. He was planned to fight “Sugar” Shane Mosley until the quake prompted him to withdraw and dash to Haiti to find his sister. He tallied eight family members who died in the quake. Far from being a doctor or rescuer, Berto literally beats people up for a living, but he’ll do his part too: His title defense against Carlos Quintana (27-2-0, 21 KOs) is the main event of a fight night billed as “Fighting for Haiti,” with 10 percent of the gate going toward Haiti relief and 100 percent of Berto’s effort going to punch a Puerto Rican.
