Aargh, Single Mates!

Rum, buggery, and the lash: The real traditions of the British navy, according to Winston Churchill, all must also be considered perks of high-seas piracy. Even before Navy snipers were ventilating their skulls at 40 yards on rolling seas, pirates’ lives were best romanticized from afar, away from the lice, the claustrophobia, the institutionalized torture, the disease, the filth, the occasional cannibalism, the loneliness, the constant threat of attack. When caught, pirate captains could expect to be tried, hanged, and forebodingly left to decompose in a publicly displayed cage. It was a hard-knock life. So why would Singles Travel International host a pirate-themed throwdown — “Mix, Mingle and Mischief” — at a bar named for buccaneers? Could be that chicks dig scars, dudes still pine for a good wench, and everyone who doesn’t lisp his r’s enjoys talking in ridiculous pirate accents. Score some booty at 8 p.m. Friday at the Pirate Republic Seafood Restaurant and Bar (née Shirttail Charley’s, 400 SW Third Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Visit piraterepublicbar.com or singlestravelintl.com.
Fri., April 16, 8 p.m., 2010
