Jockeys and Juleps

When the late Hunter S. Thompson wrote that the Kentucky Derby was “decadent and depraved,” the Louisville native was referring to the crowd, not the actual event. The derby itself is commonly thought of as the world’s most distinguished horserace — “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” But whatever debauched individuals Dr. Gonzo encountered are now 40 years and hundreds of miles removed from this Saturday’s Kentucky Derby Party at Cinema Paradiso. There, you can watch the derby from any of the giant movie screens while sipping mint juleps. There’s also a prerace Louisville Tea Party in the courtyard with sandwiches, pastries, and rare and organic teas as well as the “Win, Place, and Show” contest.
