Diego Rivera Is Just Scratching the Surface

The 2010 Census questionnaire pointed out an unnerving observation on how we see ourselves: a mass of checked and unchecked boxes. For those of us with familial roots in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Guatemala, the qualifier is Hispanic — but contrary to the questionnaire, the Latin American experience often has more alternate layers than a Pedro Almodovar film. If this all proves too frustrating, put down the pencil, bypass the boxes, and spend the day instead appreciating some of the most important Latin American art over the last 100 years with “The Pearl and Stanley Goodman Latin American Collection and Recent Acquisitions from the Museum’s Latin American Collection” at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale (1 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). Acclaimed art collectors Pearl and Stanley Goodman supply works from Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, Puerto Rican photographer Carlos Betancourt, Cuban-born artist Ernesto Oroza, and others in an all-encompassing Latin American showcase. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 12 to 5 p.m. The exhibit runs until December 5. Call 954-262-0239, or visit moafl.org.
Tuesdays-Sundays, 11 a.m. Starts: May 8. Continues through Dec. 5, 2010
