Your Own Personal Jesus

Yes, the musical backdrop to watching a self-absorbed priest try to save all of London’s wandering pilgrims in the ’80s new wave musical The Gift at the Mos’Art Theatre is none other than Depeche Mode and the Cure. Depeche Mode songs “Personal Jesus,” “Peace,” “Enjoy the Silence,” and “Wrong” and the Cure’s “Pictures of You” are sung throughout this tale, written by Ouida Williams. The dark and stormy odyssey starts out when our knight in gothic armor, Bishop Drake. sets sail on a vessel to Paradise to save humanity. The folks from Mos’Art gave us a sneak peak on the show: “ ‘Blood, rape, murder on every street… evil is upon us!’ [Drake] shouts as he raises his mast against wind and sea.” Also, during the voyage, a drunk womanizer named Aaron Lightfoot stumbles onto Drake’s holy vessel, leaving the drunkard no choice but to join in on the journey to Paradise. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $12. Call 561-337-OPOD, or visit mosarttheatre.com.
Fri., May 14, 8 p.m.; Sat., May 15, 8 p.m.; Sun., May 16, 2 p.m., 2010
