Sculptures J.R.R. Tolkien Would Love

“Inspired by Nature: Beyond Function”is a sculptural exhibit of two local artists. Bob Bagley of Parkland has spent 20 years building and restoring pipe organs — a highly specialized pursuit that’s led him to create whimsical wood sculptures that look like warped trees — or maybe furniture in a Hobbit’s house. Jan Kolenda, the other local artist, has a similar aesthetic: Her Bougainvillea Teapot, for instance, is a frightening chunk of a tree trunk, with thorned spouts, that you might find in a canteen in hell. Both artists appear to like to transform functional things, like teapots, into growths from a fairy-tale forest.
