The Wedding Stumble

The British love a farce, and There Goes the Bride, an old play by Ray Cooney and John Chapman from the 1920s, is one of their best. It’s about the very bad experience of a man named Timothy Westerby. His daughter is getting married on the same day that he has to come up with an ad campaign for the new Perkins Bra with the endorsement of a flapper star, Polly. Then he falls, bangs his head, passes out — and wakes up thinking he’s a 1920s movie star with the flapper right there beside him for this most auspicious day, his daughter’s wedding. Polly is invisible. But this is Britain, and it would be rude to point that out. So his wife adjusts to Polly’s nonpresence, and the wedding day begins to proceed. But Timothy’s cranial trauma is only going to escalate.
