Ciao, 1963

The film 8 1/2 won the Best Foreign Film Oscar like 45 years ago — it’s Italian — and was chosen to be shown the closing night at 6 for Cinema Paradiso’s first Italia Festa Film Festival, which runs Thursday until Monday. 8 1/2 is on a ton of current critics’ top-ten lists for greatest films ever created and was even critically acclaimed in its time: It won two Oscars and was nominated for three others. You can expect a well-strung screenplay, great directorial shots from Federico Fellini, and great costume design (that was Oscar number two). Here’s the setting: The year is 1963, and a famous director by the name of Guido Anselmi has director’s block, which is stalling the new science fiction film he’s got in the works. His artistic and marital difficulties lead to a series of flashbacks and dreams, memories and fantasies, interwoven throughout his real life. After the film, the Gelati Martini Lounge, located in Wilton Manors, will serve sorbet and gelati at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale). Admission is $10.
