Godzilla and Family

Japan is indisputably quirky. To celebrate its culture in all its gorgeous kinks, the Morikami Museum, disappointingly, is currently not displaying room-sized canvases of manga tentacle porn. But it has unveiled the next best thing: a collection of kaiju. That word refers to the oversized monster suits that actors wore while trampling miniaturized sets of cities. The original is Godzilla.

The genre has also spawned a lucrative line of kitschy toys, and the Morikami Museum is exhibiting more than 100 of such treasures from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. Of course, even toy monsters wouldn’t be Japanese without a disturbing subtext. The Morikami warns that the monsters “give form to humankinds deepest anxieties in an age dominated by nuclear, biological, and environmental peril.” So don’t be surprised when a kaiju crawls out of the BP oil slick. We’ll call it Beyond Godzilla.

“Kaiju! Monster Invasion” is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at the Morikami Museum (4000 Morikami Park Road, Delray Beach). It runs till October 17, and admission costs $12 or less. Call 561-495-0233, or visit morikami.org.
Tuesdays-Sundays, 10 a.m. Starts: June 8. Continues through Oct. 17, 2010
