Although Fall Out Boy clearly has soul-music influences and even covered Michael Jackson's "Beat It," the punk link to the genre was never quite so pronounced prior to A Loss for Words' album Motown Classics. Released earlier this year, the album is primed for soundtrack placement on a teen drama and serves to soften the edges of this rough-and-tumble act.
In the live setting, expect the Massachusetts quintet to add rapid-fire snares and chugging guitars to classics like the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" and the Temptations' "My Girl" — which might result in a few of the parents in the audience taking more notice than usual.
Sharing the bill are some punk groups more likely to roll up their sleeves and show their tattoos, including the wildly aggro Kid Liberty as well as Transit, which employs a comparatively polished indie-rock sound.
