Like any sci-fi franchise worth its salt, Serenity has a movement of cult-like fans. They call themselves the Browncoats, and they will be out in force at Cinema Paradiso for a screening of the gritty, award-winning blockbuster film Firefly, based on a canceled Fox show.
Whereas the crew of Enterprise was perhaps a little square in their color-coded jumpsuits, the stars of Serenity are greasy space cowboys on the run from a totalitarian intergalactic authority, the Alliance, that is very much unlike the socialist, peaceable Federation in Star Trek. The fringes of the Alliance are a lawless frontier, where the crew has to dodge an assassin and then comes across a planet with perfectly preserved cities and corpses. Its a trip.
The proceeds from Saturdays screening go to charity, and to appease the Browncoats, theres a costume competition, raffle, trivia games, and more.
