Fusik (pronounced "few-sick") has its roots in the South Florida break-dancing scene, and the band isn't shy about bringing hip-hop fundamentals to the masses. Without MCs or Froot Loop-y beats, Fusik digs below the surface of hip-hop.

Formed in 2005, the five-piece band's Latin-tinged, instrumental funk brings to mind Medeski, Martin & Wood and the Spam Allstars. Within a few years of its conception, the band had an LP out (2007's Fusik: Only a Few Are Sick) and some big gigs, including a show for 3,000-plus at the Evolution II festival in Orlando. The band will celebrate the release of its second album, Hot Skillet, with a party at the Culture Room. The disc showcases the band's maturity through simple yet creative and well-arranged grooves. Plus, a break-dance competition should drive home the funk/hip-hop connection this band represents.
