Stitching Up Columbine

To artist Kerry Phillips, a pack rat’s personal effects are the ultimate expression of art. As cataloged in her Sun-Sentinel profile last year, these include netted fruit bags and buttons. Phillips is the winner of Best in Show for Chairs Found and Fixed at the “59th Annual All Florida Juried Competition and Exhibition.” (We can assume the piece consists of, well, chairs — though you’ll have to visit the gallery to confirm.)

If you find found objects tiresome, fear not. The exhibition has nearly 100 works of art — sculptures, photos, videos, paintings, and installations — hand-picked out of 1,400 submissions from in-state artists. Arguably the most awesome is Noelle Masons. She won a merit award for “Nothing Much Happened Today (for Eric and Dylan),” a 50- by 66-inch, stunningly realistic stitching — that’s right, stitching — of a still image from surveillance footage of the Columbine shooting. “The 59th Annual All Florida Juried Competition and Exhibition” is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m at the Boca Raton Museum of Art (501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton) and runs till August 8. Admission costs $8 or less. Call 561-392-2500, or visit bocamuseum.org.
Wednesdays-Fridays, 10 a.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, noon. Starts: July 14. Continues through Aug. 1, 2010
