Our Other Big Three

This doesn’t have to be the greatest sports town, what with all the beaches and clubs and year-round parties — but still, there’s no doubt that South Florida loves winners, as evidenced by the Miami Heat’s welcome party for Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh last month. And, as luck would have it, the Florida Marlins are also in the business of having a trio of young talent with worlds of promise too.

Take Mike Stanton, for example, a rookie who’s come out this season and made a lot of noise with both his bat and fielding prowess. There’s also pitcher Josh Johnson, who’s quietly making history with his 1.80 ERA and streak of runless games. Then there’s Hanley Ramirez, an established superstar with the potential to become the best ballplayer in the bigs. The Fish might be near the bottom of the NL East standings, and their owner might be a major-league jackass, but still, our other big three is pretty special. OK, not Wade/James/Bosh special. But still special. The Fish will meet the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday at Sun Life Stadium (2269 Dan Marino Blvd., Miami Gardens). The game begins at 7:10 p.m., and tickets start at $9. To bad 9 people make up a team in baseball instead of 5. Two good players and one pitcher playing every 5 days makes a nice mediocre team, not a contender. People think attendence is poor now, wait until the 2nd year in the new stadium, it will be even worse than it is now. The team and Dade county have alienated Broward from caring about this team. At least the food at the new stadium might not make you sick.
