The Other Super Rookie

Some have said Florida Marlins outfielder Mike Stanton could give Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg a run for his money for NL Rookie of the Year. Mainly because Stanton is just a mountain of five-tool awesomeness that can hit 500-foot home runs and throw out runners like a heat-seeking missile. However, the Fish have another possible Rookie of the Year candidate in first baseman Gaby Sanchez, less glamorous yet just as filled with potential to dent asses with his baseball prowess as Stanton. The 26-year-old Sanchez has been quietly consistent all season long, killing them softly with his 11 home runs, 44 RBIs, 23 doubles, and a .304 average. Meanwhile, the St. Louis Cardinals come into town with a Rookie of the Year candidate of their own in pitcher Jaime Garcia. No word yet on whether Garcia will throw in this series, but you can bet Gaby will wreck some Red Bird pitchers either way. Über-rookies Sanchez and Stanton and the rest of the Marlins host the Cardinals at Sun Life Stadium (2269 Dan Marino Blvd., Miami Gardens). First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. Friday. Tickets start at $9.
