The Real Birthers Movement

Family, work, or a tight-knit group of overly enthusiastic mommy friends could be blamed for us women having a stranglehold on our ovaries. Although you’ll find feminist works both on disputing and applauding the importance of becoming a mother, a new art show helps to broaden the scope of what it means to birth something into being.

In “The Fine Art of Motherhood” at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, three Florida-based women artists use glass sculpture, feminist installation art, quilted pieces, photography, and organic encaustic painting to force the viewer to look at the birthing process outside of the confines of the hospital room and more into a creative process of birthing — whether it is a work or art, a book, or a bouncing baby boy. Fort Myers artist Kathy Iwanowski explains the idea behind the show: “I have birthed one living being of my own and many, inanimate ones — found-object sculptures, mixed-media paintings, music, and poems. I consider all of them, works of art, special gifts.” “The Fine Art of Motherhood” is open to the public Monday through Friday 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale (1799 SE 17th St., Fort Lauderdale). Free. Call 954-308-2109, or visit artinstitutes.edu.
Mondays-Fridays, 8 a.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m. Starts: Aug. 5. Continues through Sept. 2, 2010
