In The Fine Art of Motherhood at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, three Florida-based women artists use glass sculpture, feminist installation art, quilted pieces, photography, and organic encaustic painting to force the viewer to look at the birthing process outside of the confines of the hospital room and more into a creative process of birthing whether it is a work or art, a book, or a bouncing baby boy. Fort Myers artist Kathy Iwanowski explains the idea behind the show: I have birthed one living being of my own and many, inanimate ones found-object sculptures, mixed-media paintings, music, and poems. I consider all of them, works of art, special gifts.
