Viva Roadshow Freaks

Waiting for vaudevillian swamp rock band Viva Le Vox’s homecoming after two months of touring is analogous to the idea of a crack addict preparing to receive a dime bag after 48 hours of excessive tweaking. Overly dramatic? Nope. Not for a band that’s warned city after city via hilarious yet menacing Facebook status updates that they were going to “rock [them] a new asshole.” And South Floridian fans know that they were simply telling it like it is — VLV does, in fact, rock you a new one.

During a live show recorded on the band’s most recent CD, Wayward Ones, frontman Tony Bones described where the band was from as “the crooked dick that hangs off this great country, called Florida.” Blessed be the folks in Viva Le Vox for bringing themselves all the way back down to the tip of that crooked penis — to entertain/frighten us with two evenings of their anarchic music complete with guitar, drums, accordion, washboard, bull fiddle, and florid psychosis. But there’s more good news: VLV isn’t coming alone — it has joined forces with the Coney Island Cockabilly Roadshow. This tour has captured the carnival flavors of Brooklyn’s Coney Island including sword swallowers, flame throwers, burlesque dancers, and sideshow freaks galore. The road show features Jelly Boy the Clown and the Squidling Bros. Circus Sideshow, rockabilly band Jason & the Punknecks, Hickry Hawkins, the Holy Roller Sideshow, and blues-punk band Guitar Bomb.

Witness the pinnacle example of stage presence that is Viva Le Vox and the carnie spirit of the Coney Island Cockabilly Roadshow at 8 p.m. Friday at Churchill’s (5501 NE Second Ave., Miami). Show costs $10. Call 305-757-1807, or visit churchillspub.com. And/or check them out at 3 p.m. Saturday at Exit 66 (219 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). This show is free. Call 954-357-9981, or visit exitsixtysixnightclub.com. Don’t take the touring act’s stopover for granted, because just as quickly as it arrives, it will vanish once again into the darkness of the night.
Fri., Aug. 6, 10 p.m., 2010
