Going South on Memory Lane

You’ve likely heard some variation of the saying “The farther south you go, the more north it gets” regarding Florida’s cultural makeup. It’s easy to forget that Florida is not just southern but Southern. And in case you need a reminder of Florida’s Deep South roots, wander on over to the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum in Delray Beach for its annual Living Heritage Day. The festival will take place along NW and SW Fifth Avenue, with a wagonload of old-timey activities, from entertainment (music, dancing, storytelling) and demonstrations (how to make brooms and soap) to food (fried corn bread and collard greens), and if you can get your kids to put down the Nintendo DS, there will be plenty of children’s activities as well (horseshoes, sack racing, tug of war). The festival runs from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday at Spady Cultural Heritage Museum (170 NW Fifth Ave., Delray Beach). Admission is free. Call 561-279-8883, or visit spadymuseum.com.
