Huge Dogfighting Bust Went Down Only After Cops Brought Their Pit Bulls to the Fight

The grainy footage shows two snarling pit bulls in a dimly lit barn, staring each other down through a haze of cigarette smoke. Walled in by a makeshift ring of three-foot-high plywood planks, the collarless dogs twitch and wag their tails, expending nervous energy like prizefighters shadowboxing in the ring moments before the opening bell.

Both dogs are males and have a tan coat and a white belly, which makes it difficult to tell them apart. They're about 10 months old — young for fighters. This is their first taste of combat.

Each dog has a handler who grips it by the scruff of the neck and positions it opposite its foe in the corner of the 16-by-16-foot ring. When they're released, the pit bulls collide with a dull thud. One dog lands on its back, and the other pounces, grabbing hold with its jaws. The two animals spend the next several minutes growling and panting, locked in a ferocious struggle.

John Bacon, who owns the dog that's on top, bends at the waist and rests his hands on the knees of his baggy overalls, hovering close to the tangle of fur and flesh. He cajoles his pit bull to release its bite and improve its position. The dogs tumble over each other, and Bacon jumps out of the way. "There you go!" he shouts. "That's where you want to be!"

The other dog is getting mauled. It emits a piercing squeal, followed by a whimper. Laughter ripples through the crowd. Joseph Addison, a spectator who wears his hair in a jumble of chin-length braids, suggests it's time to stop the match.

"This motherfucker through, man," he says to Bacon. "He's done."

Using a small, wedge-shaped piece of wood called a break stick, Bacon pries open his dog's jaws, releasing its opponent. The animals are separated and taken back to their respective corners to "scratch." If they charge again, the fight continues. If one dog refuses, it will be branded a "cur" — an almost certain death sentence.

At the moment of truth, the vanquished dog cowers while Bacon's dog attacks without hesitation, biting down and thrashing its powerful neck to inflict maximum damage. Again the handlers separate the dogs. The fight is over.

Someone in the crowd asks the losing dog's owners what they plan to do with it.

"I'll take 'im home," one says.

"Take him home?" comes the incredulous reply. "Look at this shit! You'll take him home?"

"Yeah," the man repeats, declining the offer to use an impromptu electric chair: an extension cord rigged with alligator clips attached to one end. "I'll take 'im home."

A year and a half later, Bacon describes the scrap in the East St. Louis barn as "just a little wrasslin' match." In dogfighting parlance it's known as a "roll" — a brief sparring session used to gauge whether a pup has the fighting spirit known simply as "game."

"A contract fight is something you prepare for," Bacon explains. "A roll is just ten, maybe 15 minutes. The dogs ain't gettin' hurt too much."

He's a carpenter by trade, but Bacon knows a lot about dogfighting. Still, there was one thing he didn't know on March 22, 2009.

He was unaware that his dog's opponent, Hammer, was property of the United States government.

The dog was purchased, trained, and brought to the fight by Terry Mills and Jeff Heath, veteran Missouri State Highway Patrol officers who were conducting an extensive undercover investigation into the secretive and brutal world of organized pit-bull fighting and breeding. Both men wore video- and audio-recording equipment concealed in their clothes.

Four months after the fight in the barn, a multiagency task force conducted a series of raids in eight states. Agents arrested 26 dogfighters, including Bacon, and seized more than 500 pit bulls — the largest dogfighting bust in American history. To make their case, investigators had spent a year and a half taking part in the same gruesome activities for which they would later make the arrests.

In early 2008, Terry Mills was working on a domestic-terrorism task force headed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The unit had received a tip that a "known domestic terror group" was standing guard at dogfights in rural Missouri.

"We already knew that in Texas, a particular well-known outlaw motorcycle gang was providing security at dogfights," Mills says over a cup of coffee in his hometown of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. "So for an organized militia group to be doing that, it wasn't really surprising."

Mills, a burly 55-year-old whose soft eyes and stubbled cheeks are set off by a bushy gray goatee, cultivated a source who had ties to Bob Hackman, a renowned breeder of fighting pit bulls in the Midwest. The confidential informant worked as a "yard boy," feeding and watering the dogs and "shaping" them for upcoming fights with a variety of training exercises.

Mills and FBI agent Bob Hoelscher outfitted their snitch with a wire and eavesdropped as he attended a series of dogfights in northeast Missouri. But after three months of sleuthing, they'd made no headway in the domestic-terrorism probe.

=====>>>Stop The Over-Breeding of Pit Bulls - Please Read! Did you know that "Pit Bulls" are currently the number one bred dog in the United States? Ironically, they are also one of the hardest breeds to find homes. It is estimated that there is a current average of 3 million "Pit Bulls" living in the United States and only 1 in 600 will successfully find a "forever" home. Sadly, for every 1 "Pit Bull" placed in a loving home there are 599 killed. Shockingly, that statistic unfortunately does not exclude puppies! Roughly 200 "Pit Bulls" are killed each day in Los Angeles alone because there are not enough homes for the ever-growing population of unwanted dogs. This is a frustrating problem due to over-breeding either intentionally or accidentally. Either way you look at it, it comes down to irresponsible actions by irresponsible and or greedy humans. Many people may not realize that any dog not spayed or neutered is a potential contributor to this terrible problem. The average fertile dog can produce 2 litters in one year. The average number of puppies in a canine litter is 6-10. In six years, one female dog and her offspring can theoretically produce 67,000 dogs..many or most of which will end up dead. There are between 4,000 and 6,000 animal shelters in the United States. The number of cats and dogs entering those shelters each year is roughly 6-8 million! However, only 30% of the dogs and 2%-5% of the cats are actually reclaimed by their owners. This means the total number of cats and dogs euthanized by shelters annually is 3-4 million! It is estimated that 1 million of those dogs are "Pit Bulls". Surely you can see how over-breeding has negatively affected the lives of so many dogs. It is a fact that "Pit Bull" breeders are directly responsible for a significant percentage of the estimated 1 million "Pit Bulls" killed by euthanasia each year nationwide.

Thank you for this excellent story! I have two fantastic pits (one of whom will be training to be a therapy dog soon) whom I love. This multistate raid was a miracle for abused dogs - even the ones who did not survive now do not have to suffer as they did. Thousands more will not be born to suffer hugely, and even the criminals with shorter sentences will pay a big price in terms of losing their professions and being on probation. This was HUGE. I am terribly, terribly sorry that the undercover police had to involve a few additional dogs to get their job done, but I am extremely grateful they did it and saved thousands of dogs, existing and future, from misery. Dan, I don't even know where to start rebutting your crazy misinformation. But I will say this:approximately 30 people a year are killed by dogs in the US. Contrast that with approximately 41,000 people per year killed in car accidents and 15,000 murdered by humans. As a result, I should be (and am) significantly more afraid of you than I am of the pit bull who sleeps on my pillow at night.

  • beware the owner, not the dog! 09/04/2010 1:09:00 AM

first off... Dan, you're a FUCKING IDIOT! period! secondly, to all the other idiots that think this shit is ok, FUCK YOU! and if i find you in my hood, ill show you what "game" is WITHOUT my dogs! Ill show you all the way to the hospital! PUNK ASS BITCHES! Thirdly, if its for the greater good, and saves WAY WAY WAY more lives than hurts, i think we have to really look hard at the bigger picture! I love my two rescued pitties and i would die for them as they would for me! and in no way do i condone ANY of this type of behavior or actions in any way! I do however think that the results of these undercover agents has clearly trumped the not so desirable actions that led up to the final outcome. I think if people ACTUALLY read the WHOLE story, they would see that there was more to the protection of these animals then first perceived. This is hard to swallow for any and every animal lover, but in reality this would have gone on for who knows how long and hundreds if not thousands of innocent dogs would have been murdered without anyone knowing about it! In my opinion its 2 steps back, 10 steps forward for the dogs! I hate to be the one to say it, but id rather see operations like this go down rather than allowing these P.O.S's to keep doing what they are doing! So to all the REAL AMstaff/Pitbull LOVERS out there, much love and respect to all of you! To all the rest, i pray you educate yourself and do not waste the rest of your life being ignorant and heartless! unfortunatly, dogs are better at changing, adapting and rehabilitation than most humans. If it were the opposite, we would probably live in a much brighter and peaceful world!

  • Bob Johnson 09/03/2010 9:00:00 PM

Someone should round up these pit bulls and their owners, give them an hour to get their own firearms, and send them to Afghanistan to do some real fighting. I'd like to see a Taliban with a pit pull locked on his raggedy ass and the owner running for his. Not sure who the real animals are here.

  • Bully Love 09/02/2010 11:47:00 PM

I suppose you would have come up with a better solution to have a country wide raid? If these guys didn't keep there cover to a t, they themselves probably would have been killed. Step outside of the box, the world is not a nice place. The law is corrupt, officers and members of congress are no saints as you may believe. They break and bend the law on a daily basis to get what they want. These men were doing it for the right reasons and the final outcome and the positive effect it will have for years to come is what most important. Instead of complaining on how they got the job done, step up and try accomplishing something of this scale yourselves.

  • Deborah 09/02/2010 2:22:00 AM

Sarah, I understand that the police risk their lives in the line of duty but that has nothing to do with them actually fighting dogs to catch dogfighters. What gives them the right to harm an innocent animal when they're supposed to be protecting them. The cops themselves said the dogs were friendly to people, so they weren't a threat. The police have caught dogfighters WITHOUT INJURING DOGS plenty of times before I just believe this way was FAR TOO EXTREME. Good job on the convictions but JEEEEERRRRSSS, Bad job,and 2 THUMBS DOWN for HARMING DOGS!! They sure weren't keeping the dog safe by fighting him how can you popssibly do that?!!?? This type of activity wouldn't and shouldn't be tolerated FROM POLICE EITHER. You've made yourself just like them. If you applaud Police fighting dogs what else do you applaud? Would you applaud me if I were to fight dogs to "catch dogfighters"? I read all 8 pages word to word as well as all comments before I posted.

  • jat reed 09/02/2010 12:53:00 AM

you guys are retarted they are not made mean and being dog agressive does not mean they are mean. fighting is in there blood and if half you hypocrites took the time to do a little research you would realize that regardless of being bred to fight they make wonderful pets. they just do not like other dogs. by this book written by louis colby in there you will find the truth not the hysteria spread by the un humane society. these sick people take dogs away from innocent people and murder them that is what your beloved humane society is all about. they have went to peoples yards killed there dogs and the people were found not guilty.

  • Sarah 09/01/2010 11:44:00 PM

Deborah, you conclusion is bypassing all of the good that came out of this. If you had actually read the entire article word for word you would have seen that the officers did the best they could to keep their own dogs safe during the undercover operation. They had a total of 40 dogs, and saved around 500 while convicting around 30 dog fighters. They sent the dog fighting world a message that they will not be tolerated. Yes, it is terrible that a FEW dogs suffered, but think of the good that came out of this. It brought dog fighting to a new light in the public's view again, got rid of a bunch of dog fighters, and will keep more from even joining this cruel "activity." I applaud what these officers had to go through to convict all these men and save these dogs. I applaud them for risking their own lives for the sake of man's best friend, and for showing all of these creatures that most of us still are trying to help them.

THESE TYPE OF PEOPLE NEED TO PAY ATTENTION AND LISTEN AND LEARN. NOBODY IS PERFECT. BUT KNOWING GOD AND DOING YOU'RE BEST TO OBEY HIM. THE RIGHT FROM THE WRONG. YOU CAN NOT GO WRONG. • Deborah 09/01/2010 10:18:00 PM

If society says they don't want this and it's against the law, then my perception is you've got to do something like this every once in a while." WHAT BREAK THE VERY LAWS THAT "SOCIETY" DOESN'T WANT!! UPHOLD THE LAW IN ANOTHER WAY & NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF THESE ANIMALS!! HSUS AND PETA AND ANYONE ELSE THAT I FIND OUT FELT LIKE THIS WAS A "GOOD THING TO DO" I WILL NOT DONATE ANOTHER RED CENT TO ANY OF YOUR ORGANIZATIONS WHO "PROMOTE THE WELL BEING OF ANIMALS" BUT FEEL THAT POLICE DOGFIGHTING TO CATCH DOGFIGHTERS IS OK BECAUSE NOW INSTEAD OF SOMEONE ELSE INJURING DOGS YOU ARE!!! INSTEAD OF HELPING A DOG YOU'RE HURTING MANY MANY DOGS!!

  • Deborah 09/01/2010 10:03:00 PM

From this article I see that this investigastion got almost immediately out of hand and the people sworn to uphold the law began to break these same laws, almost with a sense of regularity. Where does it end ill the next investigators engage in sexual acts with a minor as someone previously stated, will your child be the next to end up with drugs put on the streets by POLICE!!? Still, he notes that "they have to have limits to what they can do" and points to several instances in which undercover officers blurred the lines between right and wrong, including a case in Cleveland in which drugs that were initially sold by police to suspects later turned up at a local high school. Fighting dogs under the cover of a badge makes you just as bad if not WORSE than the dogfighters you're trying to arrest. WHAT ABOUT THE DOGS??? This makes absolutely no sense to me. I'm glad that those guys are done and the dogs are confiscated and hopefully were adopted out, but that's probably just wishful thinking, they were more than likely euthanized by the DOGFIGHTING ASPCA/HSUS Officers that were supposed to be rescuing them. FIND A BETTER WAY TO GET THESE INVESTIGATIONS DONE THAN BY PUTTING AN INNOCENT ANIMAL AT RISK!!! IF NOT YOU'RE WORSE THAN THEM!!

  • blue 09/01/2010 9:11:00 PM

Really Dan? Thats like saying some guy was a serial killer so all men must be serial killers... they are not "pets or things" they are wonderfull animals that are just as much part of the family they belong to as anyone else. Given the right circumstances any living creature could snap, no matter how peacefull. I had a pitbull and i have to say he was one of the most loving dogs i have ever met, and i doubt i could ever love another dog as much as i loved him. i think dog fighters deserve to be torn apart by the poor dogs they torture only the dogs dont deserve that!! and i would have to sencond Melissa's statement about the investigation... I don't understand why for any reason a "undercover agent" would have to bring a dog to the dog fight, how is that any better than the people they arrest? Maybe i misunderstood, but if that really is what happened doesn't anybody else think thats a little f###ed up?

  • Bully Love 09/01/2010 9:07:00 PM

Are you questioning his motives during the investigation? The legal system does not make it easy to present a case and have it actually amount to something. In order to build a case that will hold up you need substantial amount of evidence. Even murder cases can go on for 5,6,7 years before someone is prosecuted or equated. Yes it is hard to comprehend why is takes so long or why the bust couldn't have happened earlier, but it is a wonderful thing that it happened at all. These men knew what they were doing and needed the right moment to act. I applaud them for their courageous efforts and for uncovering this ring. Crossing bloodlines of fighting dogs is what results in the toughest dog. With rescues, you don't know what environment they come from, their bloodline could be tainted from these low lives. Unfortunately, even training cannot reverse the bloodlines instinct of some pit bulls and unfortunate situations happen if they end up in an irresponsible owners hands. More busts like this, proper breeding from licensed breeders, and responsible owners will give you a real pit bull, the kind that millions across the US have in their homes as a family member.

  • Rockin 09/01/2010 8:20:00 PM

Dan sounds intelligent but really ignorant. Pits or more so the bull terrier type dog are not fiercely hostile towards other dogs unless trained to be. He did state the fighting dogs are like that and then he states when they are taken home as puppies. So really what he is saying is they are always like that. Sheer ignorance. Initially most of the pits or bull terrier types were bred for assisting ladies in their nurseries to assist in alertness when children awoke, were crying, or even in danger. Truly they display behavior that is loving, for those of you that know the breed besides the obvious loyalty, they are plain goofy! If you read statistics on ones that were trained to fight, for example some of the Michael Vick dogs, you would then realize that most of those dogs were rehabilitated completely. They are known to be one of the most forgiving animals that ever lived. So here we go again, blame the deed, not the breed. They are numerous irresponsible dog owners, but more high in numbers are the responsible ones. Depending on the breed, some need a lot more training and dedication but all in all dogfighting is despicable. If your dog has "game" I want to take your dog away from you, and I want to shut you down. Don't worry I'll find you. Michael Vick, David Tant just the big names, I can make yours big too!

  • melissa 09/01/2010 8:18:00 PM

WHY FOR YOU UNDER COVER'S THAT ARE IN THIS TO STOP IT. INGAGE IN IT FOR SOO LONG?? WHY? IF YOU HAVE RECORDING'S AND I'M SURE MANY?! I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY AN INVESTIGATION TAKE'S SO LONG!!! THAT'S JUST NOT RIGHT. THE LENGTH IN TIME. I'M VERY THANKFULL FOR IT TO HAVE BEEN BUSTED. BUT JUST IMAGINE HOW MANY DOG'S LIVES YOU COULD HAVE SAVED. HOW MANY FIGHT'S YOU COULD HAVE STOPED. THAT'S CRUEL AND INHUMANE ITSELF. ALL THE BAD GUY'S THAT HAVE GOTTEN AWAY DURRING THIS PROCESS TOO OR ADDED. WHEN YOU HAVE THE AUTHORITIE TO PUT AN END TO THIS BLOOD SPORT AT ANY TIME. TO END IT. YES, YOU STOPED IT. THAT'S GREAT. BUT IT REALLY DOESN'T MAKE IT ANY BETTER FOR THAT LONG OF A INVESTIGATION. PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND!!

  • Pittie 09/01/2010 8:10:00 PM

Dan please educate yourself. Any dog does what it is trained to do. Fighting doesn't come from the breed it comes ignorant owner that TRAIN them to act this way. Any dog or breed can and will attack. Yes, even small breeds can kill a child or leave them disfigured. The majority of pits would never even think about biting a human or child. Again this goes back to how the dog was raised and treated. Can't expect a abused and neglected human to act "normal" and the parents must answer for their actions, same should be done for pet owners. It's the owners fault not the dog!!

  • Denise 09/01/2010 8:04:00 PM

poeple who fighjt pittbulls are a sick mofo.... i have a pit and she is the best dog i have ever had she grew up with my children and grandchildren never once did she show an evil side ..its the owner that makes em mean...... so you need to get more info before you attack a pit bull owner who loves the breed .... get a life they do feel and love also ...

  • blah 09/01/2010 6:32:00 PM

Dan, you are a fuckin moron! You don't know what you are talking about. Its a dog, a leaving breathing creature. They bleed and feel pain just like any other dog.

  • Dan 09/01/2010 3:07:00 PM

    >>>Although fighting pit bulls are fiercely hostile toward other dogs, they are remarkably submissive to people. Handlers won't tolerate being bitten and typically kill dogs that are aggressive toward humans. This is what the what the higher-level dog fighters allegedly do. However, most people are simply interested in the money and will sell off the dog rather than kill it b/c of this behavior. There is always someone who will buy the dog with the intention of breeding and quickly making some money on it. After all, it's not a pet. It's a thing. Something to make money from. And more people buy these puppies and take them home as pets. Then when it attacks the neighbor kid or shreds the neighbor's poodle, they swear they didn't have a clue it was capable of that...that they raised it like a member of the family. A man was recently mauled by a pit bull that was only NINE MONTHS OLD. I don't care if they temperment test them and they pass with flying colors. These dogs are dangerous and can trigger in an instant. When they do, it's just like the article says, you can't stop them. They will keep attacking despite being beaten with baseball bats, stabbed with butcher knives, tazered, hit with weed wackers, slammed with cinder blocks and even shot. What kind of chance does your child or Shih-Tzu (or you) have with something like that?

  • Jonas 09/01/2010 12:13:00 PM

    Good.
