“Bare” at Broward

Take one part Broadway musical Rent, a dash of Romeo and Juliet, and a heaping pile of gay angst and you have Bare, a pop-opera musical that follows two gay high school students in a tale of love and rebellion at a Catholic boarding school. Sure, this means the musical score occasionally embraces the sounds of Christian rock music, but it redeems itself with several powerhouse songs as well as a heartfelt script that is surprisingly not preachy despite the religious theme. Bare was a huge hit in L.A. before moving to off-Broadway. It doesn’t hurt that the male actors are often shirtless. Tickets cost $30; the show opens Thursday at 8 p.m. and plays at different times until September 18 at the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Call Broward Center’s box office at 954-462-0222, or visit browardcenter.org.
