Cirque du Soleil on Elm Street

Clowns are scary enough as it is. But throw some ravenous yellow teeth on them, a deranged bulbous red nose, and a Spanish accent and what you have is positively poltergeistien. If you don’t know of what we speak, you’d be forgiven; the U.S. has never been privy to the likes of Circo de Los Horrores. The Cirque du Soleil-esque show comes from Spain rather than Canada, and although it has toured successfully across Europe and South America, it has never landed on U.S. soil. Until now.

There’s a Nosferatu look-alike who essentially serves as master of ceremonies, multiple brides of Frankenstein, and an exorcist contortionist bending in ways that would make Linda Blair jealous. It’s not all bloodlust, though; there is plenty of comedy, including a sword-in-the-butt gag and plenty of audience participation. As for the acrobats, they amaze more than horrify, unless you count a flaming-stick-in-the-crotch routine. The blood-congealing (curdling is so trite) screams will start coming from the James L. Knight Center (400 SE Second Ave., Miami) on Friday. Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $20 to $80, and keep the young kiddies away. Visit circodeloshorrores.com.
Fri., Oct. 8, 8 p.m.; Sun., Oct. 17, 7 p.m.; Thu., Oct. 21, 8 p.m.; Sat., Oct. 30, 8 p.m.; Sun., Oct. 31, 7 p.m., 2010
