On first appearances alone, it’s hard to imagine any similarities between visual artist Nick Cave and the more widely recognized macabre rocker of the same name than that they share a name. For one, visual artist Nick Cave is courted by Vogue Magazine executives, has a professional dancer’s background, and runs in high-fashion circles, while rocker Nick Cave crafts bluesy, gospel-like offerings on themes of Christianity, death, and sex addiction and associates with the likes of Lydia Lunch. So what’s a burgeoning artist to do when he just so happens to share the same moniker of an already infamous artiste? Outweird him, of course, and hope that the rest of the world catches on to your creative genius in the process. In the new exhibit “Nick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of the Earth,” visual artist Nick Cave creates wearable sculptures he dubs Soundsuits out of found objects such as hair, twigs, yarn, buttons, and bottle caps. When worn, the toppling wearable pieces of art create a symphony of intricate sounds that can be at once whimsically organic and straight-up otherworldly. By using discarded objects and involving local dance schools in his performances, Cave hopes to evoke a sense of community and conservation. The exhibit will run through January 9 at the Norton Museum (1451 S. Olive Ave., West Palm Beach). General admission is $12 for adults and $5 for those 21 and under. Call 561-832-5196, or visit norton.org.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.; Sundays, 1 p.m. Starts: Nov. 9. Continues through Jan. 9, 2010
