Two words come to mind whenever the Miami Hurricanes and the Florida State Seminoles face each other: “wide right.” Another two words that come to mind could also be,“Dad Gummit.” But mostly, it’s “wide right.” Still, the two phrases have been married to each other since November of 1991, when the Canes beat the Noles 17-16 when kicker Gerry Thomas’ potential game-winning field goal sailed wide right, much to the chagrin of legendary Noles Head Coach Bobby Bowden. Bowden had a knack for exclaiming “dad gummit” to express his frustration over the years, much to Canes’ fans’ delight. A year later, it happened again when Dan Mowrey’s kick also went wide right, handing the Canes their second straight last-second victory over their interstate rival. In all, the Canes have beaten Bowden’s Noles five times via the missed last-second field goal. But now, Bowden is retired, and so the rivalry starts its new chapter at Sun Life Stadium (2269 Dan Marino Blvd., Miami Gardens) this Saturday. Kickoff is TBD.
