More About

If you’ve been in Fort Lauderdale longer than 24 hours, you’ve probably come across the name Stranahan. In fact, if you grew up here, you’ve likely been on a field trip to the Stranahan House in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale and heard the story of how one day Frank Stranahan tied a storm grate to his leg and jumped into the New River. You can see the very spot he leaped from during one of the Historic Stranahan House Ghost Tours, at 7:30 or 8:30 p.m. on October 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, and 30. For $20, you will get to tour a real haunted house, attend a Victorian funeral, and learn about the many sad trials of the Stranahan family. This year’s tour now includes a boat ride on the New River, where Sea Dog John will tell you the ghostly tales of Shirttail Charlie, Crop-ear Charlie, and the ill-fated Cooley family, who were murdered by Seminoles in 1836. And you thought cover bands were the worst thing to happen in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $20. The Historic Stranahan House is located at 335 SE Sixth Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-524-4736, or visit stranahanhouse.org.
Fridays, 7:30 & 8:30 p.m.; Saturdays, 7:30 & 8:30 p.m. Starts: Oct. 15. Continues through Oct. 31, 2010
