Suck on That Cigar

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. And sometimes it’s an exploding cigar, of the harmless kind with which Ernest Hemingway pranked a Turkish general, or of the deadly kind with which the CIA planned to assassinate a certain communist dictator. One thing’s for sure: Cigar appreciation spans the political spectrum. Castro loves them, and, famously, so did the capitalist Scott Rothstein. You won’t find South Florida’s erstwhile cigar-puffing Ponzi schemer at the inaugural Cigar Festival at the Cigar Connoisseur, a swank lounge at 202 NE Second Ave. in Delray Beach. Too bad — he would’ve had fun at this event. But 15 manufacturers will be there to peddle some of the world’s finest cigars at discounts. The smoking will be supplemented by live music, a Bacardi rum booth, and restaurant tastings. You’ll have from noon till nightfall Saturday to savor those thick, aromatic tobacco trunks. And it’s all to benefit the St. Vincent Ferrer Scholarship Fund for Children in Need. Tickets cost $100 in advance, $125 at the door. Call 561-819-1212, or visit cigarconnoisseur.net.
