A new kind of cinema is opening in Broward — a plush movie house for indie and foreign films. Living Room Theaters serves not popcorn, Coke, or processed nachos but wine and scrumptious dishes like gourmet pizza, paninis, spicy tuna hand rolls, and lemongrass flank steak skewers — served while you watch a movie on a 22-foot-wide screen from a comfy leather chair. Founded in Portland, Oregon, Living Room Theaters has started a branch at Florida Atlantic University (777 Glades Road, Boca Raton). On the weekend of the grand opening, from Thursday through Sunday, the theater is screening Client 9, the story of Eliot Spitzer, the so-called “Sheriff of Wall Street”; Enter the Void, a disturbing psychedelic thriller that follows an American ex-pat as he dies bloodily in Tokyo and reemerges as a spirit to spy on his loved ones’ turbulent lives; Last Train Home, a film shot in the cinéma vérité style that tracks the annual migration of urban workers in China during the Chinese New Year, and one fractured family caught up in this human tidal wave; and several other films, including Hitchcock’s classic Psycho.
