Ben Prestage boasts no shortage of musical talents. The Vero Beach-based one-man band is proficient with acoustic guitar, electric guitar, lap steel guitar, banjo, fiddle, diddley bow, and foot pedals he manipulates with his toes and heels. A nimble picker, he specializes in a folky form of blues shaded by guitarists tied to decades past, including Jerry Reed, Mississippi John Hurt, and R.L. Burnside. Typically armed with a cigar box guitar, Prestage's work is enveloped in a rustic, authentically antiquated feel, but his classic tastes do little to hint at his playfulness. Amid Grateful Dead, Blind Boy Fuller, and Johnny Cash covers on 2008's Live at Pineapple Willy's, the troubadour tosses in "Weedhead," a comical original about his girlfriend's deep adoration for pot: "She likes to roll it, likes to bowl it, likes to drink it in her tea/Sometimes, I think she likes the stuff better than she likes me."
