Those Unseen
To put together a photo exhibit tackling a subject as complex and weighty as refugee life requires more than good camera skills and a passing interest in the subject. For the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ touring exhibit “Invisible in the City: Lives of Urban Refugees,” the UNHCR needed to look no further than world-renowned photographer Zalmaï, who began his freelance career more than 20 years ago, traveling the world to document the lives of the politically displaced. Zalmaï himself is a former refugee from Afghanistan who fled the county after the Soviets invaded 30 years ago. This gives him an intuitive leg up when photographing refugees in such disparate nations as Colombia, Malaysia, and South Africa. “Invisible in the City: Lives of Urban Refugees” opens Monday at ArtServe (1350 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) with a 5 p.m. reception. It will continue through January 15. The exhibit is free. RSVP to 954-494-9901 or drk03@drkre.com.
