Its not easy to glamorize Amtrak. Riding those dirty, seamy trains and buses can feel a bit like being squeezed down an intestinal tract. But one artist, Arnold Levin, has managed to make travel on our neglected public transport system look adventurous, even classy. Arrivals and Departures is an exhibit at Palm Beach State College that features 22 large, black-and-white photos of Levines trip from New York to West Palm Beach on an Amtrak train. The gallery itself has been transformed by the colleges theater department into an Amtrak station, complete with a ticket booth and unspeakably filthy restroom er, that last part was made up because, lets face it: An accurate re-creation would need to be peopled with at least a few menacing junkies and half-awake drivers.
