It wasn’t that long ago that the few blocks of warehouses and businesses north of Broward Boulevard and east of Andrews Avenue near downtown Fort Lauderdale were known more as that somewhat dodgy spot between the train tracks and the nearest Starbucks than a burgeoning area of creative activity. But fast-forward a couple of years and what a complete difference a few community art walks can do. Whether you’re visiting FAT Village’s monthly art gatherings along First Avenue or trekking two blocks east to the Third Avenue Art District, the area is now home to several mixed-media, theater, and fine art businesses. Saturday, hitch a ride on one of the free trolleys and pop in from one location to the next during the annual Third Avenue Art District Artwalk (along Third Avenue near Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale). The nine artists of the district — including photographer Francie Bishop Good, fiber-optic artist Tobey Archer, and mixed-media artist Madeline Denaro — will be swinging their doors open for free to the public. The Girls’ Club and the Museum of Art (1 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) will also be taking part. Meet the artists, purchase pieces, and get in a little cardio from 6 to 10 p.m. Visit thirdavenueartdistrict.com.
