Gators and Gumbo

If you’ve been a South Florida lifer and enjoy local music, you’ll probably remember a little place called Alligator Alley. For the newbies, we are not referring to the desolated stretch of highway running through the center of the Everglades. This Alley was a tiny bar tucked in a strip mall on Commercial Boulevard that was home to local musicians, music lovers, and crispy fried alligator. Alas, it is no more. But there is hope on the horizon: The musician owner of Alligator Alley, Kilmo Doome, and his cadre of cats, the Alligator Alley Allstars, will throw a Mardi Gras party at Snyder Park — pavilion 15 — on Sunday. At 11 a.m., Fat Sunday begins with bloody marys and plastic beads. Your $10 donation will help fund a new permanent home for Kilmo and his award-winning gumbo, which he’ll be dishing out for the first time since the Alley’s closing, starting at noon. The Alligator Alley Allstars, featuring Albert Castiglia, Dave Shelley, J.P. Soars, Jimi Fiano, Kilmo, and John Yarling, start jamming promptly at 1 p.m. Visit alligatoralleyflorida.com. Snyder Park is located at 3299 SW Fourth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.
