Getting Down With Darwin

More than a century has passed since Charles Darwin discovered evolution, and still his theory is unpopular in the United States. “I came from God, not from a monkey,” insisted Georgia congressman (and primate) Jack Kingston in a recent TV appearance. The Middle Ages may rule the political right, but the scientifically astute are out there too, in growing numbers, and they’re gathering at Broward College on Saturday to celebrate Darwin’s 202nd birthday. The event kicks off at noon with lectures: Ken Wester will riff on earthworms. Erin von Wittenberg of FIU will talk about evolution and agricultural biology. The Palm Beach Zoo will show off adaptations in live animals. And AronRa — a bearded YouTube celebrity and evolutionist avenger, who by the looks of it could kick your ass — will be “gettin’ down and nerdy.” There will be raffles, food, kids’ activities, and enlightenment thinking.
