Plein Air Painters

Who says Broward is a boring place (well, besides them)? It may be a bit quiet at times, but not for artists. From graffiti to conceptual, from fine to folk, artists have lots of opportunities to get out of their lonely studios and engage in communal activities that bring them in touch with their fellow culturati. This Saturday, it’s the Plein Air Paint-a-Rama in Hollywood.

Sponsored by the Hollywood Outdoor Painters Society (HOPS), the event takes place at Anne Kolb Nature Center in West Lake Park (751 Sheridan St., Hollywood) and celebrates the 15th anniversary of the nature center. The paint-a-thon is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and you can paint anywhere in the park. You can stick to the cultivated gardens around the center, wander out into the mudflats, meander through the mangroves along the boardwalk, or tackle the tower, which offers a panoramic view of West Lake. Show up a bit early to register and pay the $20 entry fee (which goes toward the cash prizes). Following the 2 p.m. conclusion of artistic expression (which can be in any medium), participants will frame their work for judging, which will take place from 3 to 3:30 p.m. The juror is Oakland Park’s well-known plein air landscape artist, Greg Little, and he’ll announce the winners at 4 p.m.

Why bother, you might ask? Well, in addition to cash prizes and ribbons for first, second, and third place and ribbons for judge’s recognition (which look nice in the portfolio), winners will be hung in the gallery at Anne Kolb Nature Center, where a show of park paintings will be on display through February 28 (and there’s nothing to stop you from affixing a teeny price tag in the corner). The exhibition depicts scenes of Anne Kolb done by HOPS members in honor of the center’s anniversary.
