There’s something deeply satisfying about finding a little nook of South Florida artistic activity before it’s been besmirched by a commissioned Shepard Fairey graffiti piece, a glut of guided art student tour groups, or a handful of gleaming New York Times write-ups. So goes the feeling when you take a walk through FAT Village, the cove of artists’ spaces occupying 1st Avenue west of Andrews Avenue in downtown Fort Lauderdale. If you haven’t met the villagers yet, the FAT Village Arts District Artwalks (held on the last Saturday of every month) are a chance at an introduction. Stop by Saturday night when FAT Village businesses stay open past normal business hours for art appreciation, drinks, business card exchanges, and chitchat. Among the villages’ twenty-five occupants are the Women’s Theatre Project, The Puppet Network, 18 Rabbit Gallery, and New Times’s favorite silk screening machines Iron Forge Press (side note: Iron Forge Press’s Ian Rowan and Chuck Loose serve as the president and secretary of the FAT Village Art Association, respectively.) Saturday’s free gallery walk goes from 7 to 11 p.m. and includes a large exhibition space closing for the James Grimes and David Marsh Installation.
