This year’s Miami International Film Festival is replete with 100 films from 40 countries, red carpet galas, world premieres, competitions, awards, REEL Education Seminars, and other stuff to blow your independent-film-loving mind. The 2011 MIFF also features a seminar with documentarian Morgan Spurlock (the McDonald’s guy!) and will be screening Incendies, Canada’s Academy Award-nominated flick for Best Foreign Language Film. MIFF kicks off in style on Friday with Chico & Rita, the first opening-night animated feature in its 28-year history. There are also the local-focus films like Magic City Memoirs, a film shot and produced entirely in Miami, and a candid and searing look at the 1969 high school state football championship between Miami High and Miami Edison in James Lipscomb’s fascinating documentary Mooney vs. Fowle. As always with MIFF, you’ll get your fill of great flicks and events. And from the sound of it, you can be sure that this year’s festival also promises to err on the side of awesome. The 2011 Miami International Film Festival runs from Friday through March 13. Call 305-405-6433, or visit miamifilmfest.com.
