Modern Love

The Biscayne Corridor around the Upper Eastside is pretty much the only place in the world you can find a concentration of Miami Modernist, or MiMo, buildings. Dating from the ’50s and ’60s, the style took the clean lines of popular postwar architecture movements and then, of course, Miami-fied them by adding brighter colors, squigglier lines, and loopier, more off-kilter forms. And save for a few buildings on Miami Beach (notably the Fontainebleau and the Eden Roc), you can pretty much find it only on Biscayne, from about the 50s to the 70s.

To celebrate the funky structures and the burgeoning walkable neighborhood in which they stand, boosters have this year again revived the annual MiMo Madness Festival, which takes place all day Saturday along Biscayne from 66th Street to 72nd Street. That’s only six blocks, but they’ve managed to cram in the fun. In the morning, bring the kiddies for free yoga in Legion park, a kids’ talent show, a circus workshop, and more. After noon, though, put them away, because things get a little more grown-up with live music, a circus and sideshow, and even a retro-sexy afternoon performance by Cupcake Burlesque. Jugglers, acrobats, and female impersonators are also promised, as well as restaurant tastings, street vendors, and even an antique-car show. We hear the drinks are cheap over at the Legion bar in back of the park too. The scheduled fun kicks off at 10 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m., and admission is free. Call 305-609-4288, or visit mimomadness.com.
