Dont let the lack of sweat and bulging muscles fool you; poetry slams are a linguistic sport. Here, verbal athletes are judged by members of the audience in a battle of wits, syntax, performance and ultimately passion, not only in themselves but also in what they inspire. Makes you wonder how canonic heavy-hitters like Shakespeare, Byron, and Keats would have fared in such cutthroat competition. Yet, unlike the competitive nature of a slam, Friday nights fourth offering of Trapped in My Thoughts by Art-n-Hustle is a poetry jam.
Thats right, a jam. No judges, no scoring, just a gathering of like-minded individuals with an appreciation for spoken words. This latest jam will feature the exotically named poet collective the Panda-Platypus Poets along with ten other poets, whose stage names include Poetic Tease, Teardrop, and Neopopsicle. Theres no cover charge for those 21 and over ($10 if youre not) but the two-drink minimum applies to everyone. The poetic jamming starts at 9 p.m. at Stage 84 (9118 W. State Road 84, Davie).
