God of Carnage — a Smart Comedy

The Caldwell Theatre likes plays that push the envelope. Productions tend to portray twisted relationships that explain the devious nature of lifestyles that remain hush-hushed in American society. And the theater’s newest play, God of Carnage, appears to be no different. Although it has a serious subject matter, Caldwell assures that the play is very funny. More than that, this play falls under the “smart comedy” genre. The buildup: Two sets of parents attempt to resolve the criminal lifestyles of their young sons. The parents start out being civil, eating apple and pear clafoutis, no less, but the talk quickly turns into a shouting match. With drinking, fighting, vomiting, and the death of some tulips come accusations and jealousy from the characters, whose names sound French.
