OUT Yourself

With the help of like-minded members of your community, self-empowerment can — and should — be fun. The “2011 OUTlet Conference for Young LBTQ Women” is for ladies of all ages and orientations, with extra emphasis on young queer women. It’s time to work through those social stigmas that often come with not conforming to gender (and gendered) stereotypes, and you can start to do this from 8:30 a.m. until the evening Saturday at Equality Park’s Pride Center (2040 N. Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors). With Wilton Manors Commissioner Julie Carson — the first openly lesbian elected official in Broward County — as keynote speaker, the goal is to provide a solid day of social and emotional support for all in attendance.

At the conference, all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer women and friends age 14 and up are welcome — and with the help of Aqua Foundation and Safe Schools South Florida, it’s free too. Expect it to be jam-packed with workshops and talks, including the TransAction and Power Queerz Panel, the former of which invites locals to talk about trans issues and their own experiences. Also in store: live music, visual art, a space for social mixing, an included breakfast and lunch, and a chance to win tickets to Disney World, IMAX Theaters, and select Regal Cinemas. Gay Straight Alliance leaders, volunteers, artists interested in showing their work, and everyone who wants to attend should register at outlet4youngwomen.com.
